A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God" -Isaiah 40:3
Seven hundred years before John the Baptist was born, this prophecy in Isaiah told how he would come and wander in the darkness to announce the arrival of the Messiah. God wanted there to be no mistake that the Messiah was coming, and so sent John before him to "prepare the way".
Today, God sends his Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts for receiving the good news of salvation. Even before we ever heard the name of Jesus, His Spirit was in us, testifying to us his great love. God wants to be sure that every soul has an opportunity to know him personally.
Advent is a time of looking forward, of preparing the way. Each of us should take this time to examine our hearts, to see if we're truly ready for the celebration of Christ's birth. God has prepared our hearts to understand and except his Christmas of unfailing mercy and unselfish love, We'll know we're
ready for Christmas when we start living that message in our actions toward others.
